Subject: No Access to $this->db->_error_message()

I have a model class derived from ActiveRecord\Model and I want to check for errors after a CRUD operation. The posts suggest _error_message() should be valid with ActiceRecord but the Model class has no reference to the $CI->db (Undefined property: {myClass}->db). How should I be checking for errors inside the ActiveRecord\Model class?
